The Well - Analysis

This is the first poem I ever wrote. To some degree I am proud of it although it isn’t the one I would show people first. At the time I was learning about poetry in college, I believe Robert Frost, and the image of a well stuck in my head. So whilst I was mid-conversation with a friend I got the inspiration for this poem! I know most poets - if I can even describe myself as one - don’t explain their poetry but no one will ever see this anyway. My boyfriend at the time was very lacking in emotion. So, the only time I would get emotion out of him was his anger. Aside for the rare occasions I would get “love” from him. So rare that they were “mere illusions”.

It’s free verse as I am sure you can tell. Or in other words: I am too “busy” (Shall we say?) to try to create a rhyme and rhythm for my poetry. Most of my friends adore my poetry yet whenever I look over it I just feel so basic. When I read the likes of “The Flea” by John Donne and you see how well planned out his poetry is, how am I to compare? With rudimentary words that stand out so little it borders on the banal
