Noted by Me - Analysis

A short free verse poem I wrote almost a year ago. No secret deeper meanings or metaphors. It’s straight (the only thing straight about this entire substack) to the point. Whilst my mood is in an ivory tower I don’t view this poem with much enthusiasm but outside of it I love it. I edited it just now to add a full stop, semicolon and another full stop in the first stanza - which I also just separated.

Hopefully that gives the poem a bit more depth. I picked a semicolon because of how it speeds up the sentence. Pair this with the full stop at the end of line 3 and it feels like an accusatory tone is created. This, ultimately, is the core action of the poem. Accusing your loved one of being a lie - or is our perception of love the lie? The last two lines exemplify this & are the reason I love this poem. We always assume we know that love is; we assume it’s what our friends tell it is; we assume it’s what our lover tells us. In reality, it’s what we tell ourselves. I think.
